Sloe Gin

Don't waste the gin sodden sloes - remove the stones, chop and mix with dark melted chocolate for some unusual after dinner sweetmeats

Method

  1. No need to use a fancy gin - own brand will do
  2. Rinse the sloes, then spread onto a tea tray . Take cheese grater and using the roughest side roll over the sloes to prick the skins
  3. Place the sloes into a large clean jar, add the sugar then pour over the gin
  4. Seal the jar, and give it a good shake to dissolve the sugar
  5. Shake at least daily until all of the sugar has been dissolved, then once a week for the next 2-3 months
  6. By this time the gin will be a lovely dark colour given by the sloe juice
  7. Strain through a muslin-lined sieve into a measuring jug
  8. Pour into pretty bottles, seal tightly and label
  9. Sloe Gin is best when over a year old, so make more than you need the first year and carry it forward - if you can!
